Not only is the calorie count on this Smoothie King delight mind blowing, but you\u2019ll need to do a double take on the sugar content\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smoothie King Peanut Power Plus Grape (large, 40 fl oz)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1,498 calories, 44 g fat (8 g saturated), 214 g sugars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See. I kid you not.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the sugar equivalent of eating 20 Reese&#8217;s Peanut Butter Cups (not the mini ones either!). And people in America actually drink this?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s totally possible to create your own super awesome tasty, protein packed shakes without the chemicals or ridiculous sugar content.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Build Your Own Protein Shake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the simple recipe guide I use:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Liquid of choice + Protein + Fruit\/Veg + Spices<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To create your own shakes just choose from the ingredients in the categories below. <strong>At a minimum I suggest choosing a liquid, protein, and fruit\/veggie.<\/strong> But you can\u2019t go wrong with additional spice and other delish ingredients though.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my step-by-step guide to making an awesome post workout shake:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1: Liquid Base<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You will need a liquid base to keep the shake smooth and thin. Add more liquid if you prefer a thinner shake, and feel free to mix and match. I usually go with a combination of almond milk and water.<\/p>\n<p>This should be a simple choice:<br \/>\n&#8211; water<br \/>\n&#8211; unsweetened almond milk<br \/>\n&#8211; unsweetened coconut milk<br \/>\n&#8211; good ol\u2019 cow\u2019s milk (I prefer grass fed if possible)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Protein<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s totally your choice here. If you go for a protein powder, make sure it\u2019s cold-pressed, derived from pasture fed cows and free of GMO\u2019s, chemicals and sugars.<\/p>\n<p>Your best bet is:<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.biotrust.com\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">BioTrust Low-Carb<\/span><\/a> (this stuff rocks \u2013 it\u2019s whey based)<br \/>\n&#8211; VegaSports or SunWarrior (Vegan Protein powder)<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re not a fan of protein powder:<br \/>\n&#8211; Greek Yogurt (I love the non-fat FAGE. It has 18g protein per 6oz serve)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Fruit \/ Vegetables<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Use any combination of fruit you prefer. I suggest going with whatever is in season, and preferably something purchased locally.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my personal favorites:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Berries (I usually get organic frozen berries)<br \/>\n&#8211; Green apple<br \/>\n&#8211; Pineapple<\/p>\n<p>And add greens too. It\u2019s fun! You can\u2019t even taste them half the time and it\u2019s the easiest way to get greens at every meal.<\/p>\n<p>The best veggies to add:<br \/>\n&#8211; Kale<br \/>\n&#8211; Spinach<br \/>\n&#8211; Broccoli<br \/>\n&#8211; Pumpkin. I must admit I\u2019m not in love with pumpkin shakes. But around the holidays, people love this stuff. So go all in if it\u2019s your thing!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Spices<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ah the power of spices! My fave is adding cinnamon, and I don\u2019t hold back. You could also try nutmeg, cloves and allspice if you\u2019re more experimental with your shakes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 5: Optional Ingredients<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ice:<\/strong> If you want your shake extra frosty and thick, add ice cubes. This is an awesome addition in the summer time especially.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeds:<\/strong> Flaxseeds are my go-to addition. The Omega 3\u2019s and fiber are the right combination. You could use any seed you fancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nut Butters:<\/strong> If you want to add thickness to your shake, go with nuts or nut butter. Just be careful not to go overboard on this one. Nuts are still calorie dense!<\/p>\n<p>Here are some winning options for you:<br \/>\n&#8211; Almond butter<br \/>\n&#8211; Cashew butter<br \/>\n&#8211; Peanut butter<br \/>\n&#8211; Hazelnuts (oh yes, make it Nutella like!)<br \/>\nHmmm yum!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spirulina:<\/strong> This is a Hawaiian superfood you need to try. It\u2019s a dark green color, and let me warn you, it doesn\u2019t look appetizing at all. But the health benefits rock and it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coconut Oil:<\/strong> If you\u2019re looking for added fat, this will give your shake a smooth texture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extracts:<\/strong> You can use vanilla, mint, or other extracts to ramp up the flavor profile depending on the other ingredients in your shake.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, you can put whatever you like in your shakes.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>the best thing is<\/strong>, all you have to do is put the ingredients in the blender, turn it on and wait 1-2 minutes, so even those folks considered \u201ckitchen challenged\u201d (like me) can whip up this awesomeness.<\/p>\n<p>Check out my favorite shake recipe at the moment. You can try it today!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Vanilla Kale Kick<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 \u00bd cup unsweetened almond milk<br \/>\n\u2022 \u00bd cup iced water<br \/>\n\u2022 2 scoops of <a href=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.biotrust.com\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Vanilla BioTrust protein powder<\/span><\/span><\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 \u00bd cup raspberries<br \/>\n\u2022 Handful of kale<br \/>\n\u2022 Big dash of Spirulina<br \/>\n\u2022 3 ice cubes<\/p>\n<p>Toss those ingredients in a blender, mix for a minute, and then enjoy.
