On Day 6 and day 8 I got a splitting headache about halfway thru the day&#8217;s training. I am an overweight 56 year old female. So I think the exercises that are giving me the headaches are the planks, the wall sit and the mountain climbers. For example, today, the headache was too bad to continue after the 60s plank. Any suggestions?\u201d &#8211; Elizabeth<\/p>\n<p>KV:<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know the workouts are tough\u2026 It\u2019s definitely not a walk in the park. But it\u2019s not supposed to give you a headache!<\/p>\n<p><strong>It sounds like you\u2019re holding your breath during the exercise<\/strong>s \u2013 which is very common (especially during isometric exercises like the plank). Most people struggle to engage their core and breathe at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>You see, when you hold you breath, the energy in your cells plunges and you feel fatigued during your workout sooner than you should\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I often see clients holding their breath doing these particular exercises:<\/p>\n<p>(1) Isometric exercise: like the plank or wall sits.<br \/>\n(2) Aerobic exercise at high intensity: especially running and rowing sprints. It gets so hard\u2026 people forget to increase their breathing speed. If you\u2019re going faster, you need to breathe faster. Simple, right?<\/p>\n<h2>That\u00a0brings us to today\u2019s lesson on breathing!<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6779\" src=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/breat-right-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\u0004\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/breat-right-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/breat-right.jpg 851w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s SO under-rated in the fitness space\u2026 in fact, I haven\u2019t seen anyone talking about the importance of breathing to maximize your results \u2013 and of course, eliminate headaches.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s because most of us take breathing for granted. We breathe about 14 times every minute, more than 20,000 times a day, and no fewer than 526 million times during the course of an average lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Yep&#8230; that&#8217;s a LOT of breathing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Changing the way you breathe during exercise can reduce stress, boost your energy and increase your performance.<\/p>\n<p>You really need to think about and control your breathing during your workout to maximize your performance.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not \u201cone size fits all\u201d breathing, ok.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a tip for correct breathing during different exercise:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>During Strength Training<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; Inhale on the less strenuous part of the exercise. Exhale when you are exerting force. For example, when you\u2019re doing a push up, breathe out when you\u2019re extending your elbows and pushing yourself up to starting position.<\/p>\n<h2>During Recovery<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; In your break, your body needs oxygen to replete its energy stores. That\u2019s why you\u2019ll find yourself huffing and puffing. In between sets of sprints, practice diaphragmatic breathing. You\u2019ll get more oxygen into your lung and muscles per breath so you can go hard in your next exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do it: focus on filling and emptying your abdomen with each breath rather than raising and lowering your chest.<\/p>\n<h2>During Cardio<\/h2>\n<p>&#8211; You need to find a rhythm. And that\u2019s why I recommend you do NOT use headphones if you\u2019re doing cardio. Why? You can\u2019t hear yourself breathing.<\/p>\n<p>When you are doing high intensity cardio workout like <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bodyweightcardio500.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bodyweight Cardio 500<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> (with exercises like burpees or running sprints) breathe only through your mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know some folks say \u201cbreathe in through your nose, out through your mouth\u201d. But let\u2019s be honest. How much air can you really get through your nose in one breath?
