{"id":7217,"date":"2015-12-12T07:43:36","date_gmt":"2015-12-12T12:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/?p=7217"},"modified":"2015-12-11T20:45:35","modified_gmt":"2015-12-12T01:45:35","slug":"why-i-dont-do-intermittent-fasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/why-i-dont-do-intermittent-fasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I Don\u2019t Do Intermittent Fasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Why I Don\u2019t Do Intermittent Fasting<\/h1>\n<p>One of the biggest diet trends STILL going on now\u00a0is Intermittent Fasting.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t know what it is, Intermittent Fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. And no, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\"Top 5 Metabolism Myths\" href=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/top-5-metabolism-myths\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">skipping meals does not slow down your metabolism<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0(that&#8217;s just another myth)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<p>You skip meals for X number of hours (each protocol is different, but it can be 16 hours, all the way up to 24-36 hours at a time), then you only eat fewer, larger meals during the \u201cfeeding\u201d window. (sounds like an animal in the zoo, right?!)<\/p>\n<p>The benefits?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; You get to eat larger meals<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Less meal prep and cleaning up required<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Saving money on food (yep that sounds sick but it\u2019s true. If you don\u2019t eat for 24 hours, guess how much you spend on food? Nada!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>But is Intermittent Fasting all that it\u2019s cracked up to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Research shows Intermittent Fasting (when done properly) boasts a huge range of health benefits from weight loss, reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes to improving heart health. And it may even help prevent cancer, boost brain health and prevent Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a popular strategy people use to break a weight loss plateau.<\/p>\n<p>With all these benefits, <em>what\u2019s not to love about Intermittent Fasting?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, a few things.<\/p>\n<p>Problem is, too many people do it all wrong. Or use Intermittent Fasting as an excuse to binge eat a ton of junk food after a fasting period. Especially around the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s you, Intermittent Fasting is not a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019ve tried a couple of different protocols on a number of occasions\u2026 because you know me\u2026 I can\u2019t judge anything before I try it.<\/p>\n<p>And my verdict is\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>I am not a fan.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Especially for women. I strongly believe it\u2019s counterproductive to your goals.<\/p>\n<p>Before I get to my reasons why, let\u2019s be clear\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It DOES work.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m not surprised!<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t eat for 16+ hours, you will create a significant calorie deficit, plus a chemical shift in your hormones, giving your body no choice but to burn fat.<\/p>\n<p>But for some reason, Intermittent Fasting affects women\u2019s hormones differently to men\u2019s. And hey, I\u2019m not entirely sure why. I\u2019ll share what I\u2019ve discovered in just a sec.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Why I Don\u2019t Do Intermittent Fasting<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Let me start by saying my opinion comes from my personal experience. If you\u2019re a huge fan of IF, please keep that in mind before you get your knickers in a knot\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t do Intermittent Fasting anymore because I noticed diminishing returns. And by that I mean, the first time I tried fasting with a proper 16\/8 protocol \u2013 I easily lost 7 pounds in a week\u2026 That\u2019s no typo, either. I was completely shocked!<\/p>\n<p>Even though I got off to a rough start and was starving the first few days, my body quickly adapted, drastically changed and I thought, \u201cGeez, I\u2019m onto something here\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>However\u2026<\/p>\n<p>After that first time\u2026 on every occasion I did IF, I couldn\u2019t lose a pound. And at one point I was even gaining weight!<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I did extensive research, to try and figure out why this was happening.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 3 reasons why I don\u2019t do Intermittent Fasting anymore:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1) It Welcomes a Binge Eating Habit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Overeating makes you feel guilty, right?<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you haven\u2019t eaten for 16-24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed when it came time to eat at 2pm each day, I was ready to finish anything and everything in arms length. Fortunately, the house was filled with healthy food. But I still knew I was eating far too many calories in one sitting (even if they were good calories) and I felt really guilty about it.<\/p>\n<p>I was stress eating, and developing OCD habits and behaviors\u2026 and I didn\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the worst part\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you binge eat, you skip meals and fast again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it becomes a vicious cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I knew I was physically full, my mind would \u201crationalize\u201d that it was OK to eat large quantities because I\u2019d be fasting for the next 16-18 hours.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s not healthy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodyweightcardio500.com\/metabolic-fitness-challenge-special\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7073 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01-300x249.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[7217]\" alt=\"fat loss workouts\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01-300x249.jpg 300w, http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2) You Can Murder Your Adrenals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Are you feeling stressed out? I\u2019ll take a wild guess, and say yes.<\/p>\n<p>The problem\u2026?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intermittent Fasting causes even MORE stress on your body and you can mess up your hormones, especially cortisol \u2013 which slows fat loss.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I first tried Intermittent Fasting, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>I did not know this.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what happened\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Last Summer, I was super stressed about my bootcamp and online business. Turns out adding intermittent Fasting to the mix to lose a few pounds before a beach holiday was one of the worst things I could possibly do.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>You see, in order to kill my appetite, I was consuming large amounts of strong black coffee on an empty stomach. Mixed with a tough workout schedule, less than 5 hours sleep a night and an extremely busy personal training roster of clients \u2013 I was literally murdering my adrenal glands.<\/p>\n<p>YIKES!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fasting increases your cortisol levels<\/strong> which increases your blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>And in case you didn\u2019t know\u2026 A lot of thyroid and hormonal issues are all thanks to an unhealthy cortisol rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why breakfast is now a very important part of my day.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3) Energy Balance Can Affect Your Reproductive system<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alright, this reason is for women only. Fellas feel free to skip this section. \ud83d\ude09 Like I said before, men tend to handle Intermittent Fasting better than woman from a hormonal point of view\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So ladies.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been doing research on fasting and I found this particularly interesting so I thought I&#8217;d share it with you\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hormones regulating key functions like ovulation are incredibly sensitive to energy intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The main hormone released at the start of ovulation, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) pulses must be very precisely timed \u2013 or it will send everything out of whack.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the thing\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>GnRH pulses seem to be very sensitive to environmental factors,<\/strong> and may be thrown off by fasting in some women. Even short-term fasting (like 3 days) can change hormonal pulses.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Intermittent Fasting can affect women in a negative way, if your body views it as a significant stressor.<\/p>\n<p>So that might explain why some women get fantastic results doing Intermittent Fasting, while others report lost menstrual periods and early onset of menopause (like women in their 20\u2019s!)<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting fact to note here\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Women tend to consume less protein than men. And if you\u2019re a fasting woman, that means you\u2019re getting even less. Overall, you\u2019re getting less essential amino acids.<\/p>\n<p>Now here\u2019s why this matters.<\/p>\n<p>You need amino acids to activate estrogen receptors and produce insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in your liver. IGF-1 triggers the progression of the reproductive cycle.<\/p>\n<p>See how it\u2019s interlinked?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut what if I don\u2019t want to get pregnant, or those days are gone?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Great question.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The female reproductive system and metabolism are deeply intertwined.<\/span> You can bet if you\u2019re missing a period, that your other hormones are messed up too \u2013 not just the ones that help you get pregnant.<\/p>\n<h3>So, what should YOU do?<\/h3>\n<p>The way I see it, <strong>a nutrition plan should make your life EASIER,<\/strong> so you feel more energy and reach your physique and performance goals. Not be suffering\u2026 or stressing\u2026 or starving.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is unique.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I believe it\u2019s so important that you personally experiment, and figure out what works for YOU.<\/p>\n<p>Keep tweaking your meals until you find your own personal system that helps you feel healthy, strong and energized without the stress and drama of endless dieting.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what works for me, KV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>=&gt; I eat when I\u2019m hungry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>=&gt; And I don\u2019t eat when I\u2019m not hungry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Usually I do 4 small meals a day. I fast overnight for 12 hours, which works perfectly fine for me.<\/p>\n<p>When I\u2019m training hard for an event or race, I eat more since I\u2019m hungry. And when I sit at the computer for too long, I eat less simply because I\u2019m not hungry.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That one change alone has made a huge difference to my body comp, my health \u2013 and my life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No more waiting until the \u201cfeeding\u201d window was open.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Intermittent Fasting does work. It\u2019s just not for everyone. Just like there\u2019s no one strength training program right for every single person.<\/p>\n<p>You are unique.<\/p>\n<p>And you need a unique nutrition plan. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">One that keeps you sane and energized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on using Intermittent Fasting as an excuse to binge eat at Holiday parties this season, please reconsider.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no need to punish yourself.<\/p>\n<p>IF is not a magic bullet for weight loss.
