{"id":7490,"date":"2016-03-03T13:48:44","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T18:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/?p=7490"},"modified":"2017-01-16T23:43:21","modified_gmt":"2017-01-17T04:43:21","slug":"should-you-exercise-when-you-are-sick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/should-you-exercise-when-you-are-sick\/","title":{"rendered":"Should you exercise when you are sick?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Should you exercise when you are sick?<\/h1>\n<p>We\u2019re coming off the tail end of Winter here in America.. and it seems like everyone I know is sick\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever felt a sniffle or virus coming on\u2026 you\u2019ve probably wondered\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Should you skip your workout when you\u2019re sick?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7493\" src=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/flu-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"flu\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/flu-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/flu.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Great question.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It depends.<\/p>\n<p>Listen, I\u2019m NOT a doctor ok\u2026 don\u2019t take this as medical advice. However I\u2019ve done my research and experimented on myself.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my general rule when you\u2019re feeling under the weather:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If Your Symptoms Are Above the Neck (Sneezing, Runny Nose, Sore Throat): Proceed with Caution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard the old school saying\u2026 <strong><em>\u201cJust sweat it out\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can work\u2026 however you need to be really careful!<\/p>\n<p>If you have a cold symptoms (like running nose or congestion) and you\u2019re just feeling a bit off\u2026 reduce your workout intensity and proceed with caution. You might be feeling weak, so it\u2019s not a good idea to push yourself and do a super crazy high intensity workout. Keep it short, bodyweight only. Even light cardio like walking or bike can be helpful (try to stay indoors if possible \u2013 going out and doing cardio in the cold will make your symptoms worse.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, make sure you shower immediately after your workout. (I highly recommend you do that even if you\u2019re not sick, especially if you train at commercial gym! Trust me, even the cleanest looking gym is disgusting\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Try to stay inside out of the cold for at least an hour after you exercise, since your immune system drops just after your workout (before it builds itself back up to become stronger).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If Your Symptoms Are Below the Neck (Flu-Like, or Fever): Rain check<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you ever have a fever, DO NOT EXERCISE.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Your internal thermostat is malfunctioning and there are a bunch of unusual chemical reactions going on in your brain (that\u2019s why you feel freezing even if you have a temp of 104 degrees).<\/p>\n<p>When you exercise, you are generating heat and energy. Even if you only have a slight fever, your internal thermostat is unable to correctly measure your body temp and adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>So basically, you run the risk of frying your brain. This is really serious. No workout is worth permanently damaging yourself and cooking your insides. Take a time out, rest up and come back when you\u2019re feeling stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if you\u2019re already sick, please stay home. The worst thing you can do is show up to the gym in a near death like state and cough and splutter all over the place.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re like me, you wan tot do everything you can to recover from being sick and get back into your routine as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s extra important to make sure your nutrition is dialed in, so you can minimize the downtime.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you can do:<\/p>\n<p>(Again, KV is not a doctor so this is just my personal opinion and what I do when I get sick.)<\/p>\n<h2>#1: You need to get MORE SLEEP!<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s hit the most important one first. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest downfalls I see in my clients. Not getting enough sleep will slow fat loss, slow recovery time and make you vulnerable to picking up viruses.<\/p>\n<p>So do yourself a favor, and please try to get at least 7-8 hours sleep. Honestly, you know this. This isn\u2019t brand new ground breaking information \u2013 I\u2019ll bet you\u2019ve heard this plenty of times before. Make sure you hit the sack before 11pm at the LATEST! No iPhones. No emails. No Facebook. Just sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>#2: Eat Greens<\/h2>\n<p>Eat 8-10 servings of leafy green vegetables every day. Again, nothing new here. Just super important you actually do it! Especially when you\u2019re sick. Start your morning with a green juice. It\u2019s easy on your stomach, and a fast, simple way to get a boatload of nutrients in your body. Plus, the antioxidants boost will give your body extra help in fighting the cooties, and speeding up your recovery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bodyweightcardio500.com\/metabolic-fitness-challenge-special\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7073 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01-300x249.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[7490]\" alt=\"how rachel lost over 50lbs\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01-300x249.jpg 300w, http:\/\/fatlossaccelerators.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/BANNER__2_01.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>#3: Drink Tea<\/h2>\n<p>Drink organic chamomile tea with raw organic honey (from your local Farmer\u2019s market, if possible). This will help soothe your throat. Any kind of herbal tea is fine, just make sure the leaves are organic.<\/p>\n<h2>#4: Chicken Soup<\/h2>\n<p>Chicken soup? Yep, eat it. I was skeptical about this one\u2026 since I\u2019m not aware of any scientific research that has been done to prove it\u2019s effectiveness\u2026 However, there is something magical about it! Eating chicken soup simply makes you feel better.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what\u2019s even better? When someone else makes it for you \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h2>#5: Drink at least 100 ounces (3 Liters) of water.<\/h2>\n<p>Again\u2026 it\u2019s a no-brainer! However it\u2019s especially important to drink more water if you have a fever or nausea\/vomiting, since you\u2019re losing water, too.<\/p>\n<p>And keep in mind\u2026 if you\u2019re taking decongestant medication, you\u2019ll need to drink even more water since it has a dehydrating effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Will I lose my fitness if I stop working out?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the bad news is getting sick will slow your progress. But hey, that\u2019s life. Obstacles will always come up on your journey, and this is just one of them.<\/p>\n<p>How long will it take to get back up to speed?<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is different, of course. And the rate at which you regain your strength and cardio fitness will depend how fit you were in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to pay attention to how you feel when you\u2019re exercising, and adjust your intensity accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Start back by reducing your volume and intensity for the first couple of workouts after coming back from a virus.
