You know sprints rock. Today I have a special guest post from my friend and Superhero sprinter, Dennis Heenan. Don’t you think he looks like Clark Kent with his glasses on? ;)

This 5 minute sprint workout might look easy on paper. Although, I think you’ll get a good challenge from it too.

Enjoy!

Back in college as I was preparing for my freshman basketball season, my coach said something to me that would change the way I thought about my workouts forever:dennis heenan sprints

“Stop running 5-6 miles to stay in shape. Do sprints intervals instead.”

All through high school, I thought like the majority of people do these days… “If I wanted to stay in great ‘basketball shape’ I needed to do long hours of cardio.”

Oh how I was wrong.

After taking my coaches advice, within about 4 weeks I was in the best cardiovascular shape I had ever been in and I didn’t do an ounce of long cardio.

I couldn’t believe it.

See, what shocks me now is that almost 7-years later, there are still people who think long, slow, dragged out cardio is the way to get in great shape…

Luckily for you, you have people like Kate and myself on your side to give you the truth and show you how to truly get in shape fast.

Like Kate, I am a lover of high intensity workouts.

But not just any high intensity workouts… I am talking about sprints!

Over the years I have realized that sprinting comes in many different forms. In fact, I have created my own definition of the word:

“Certain exercises that are done at your highest intensity for a short period of time.”

Sure, going out a running 50 yards as fast as you can is certainly a sprint, but so is doing 30 seconds of all out burpees or sprints in place or mountain climbers.

Listen, whenever you are working at or near your anaerobic threshold your body knows you are sprinting. It knows you are giving an all out effort, which in turn forces you to burn more fat.

That’s the cool part. Scientists have shown us that the closer we work to our anaerobic threshold, the more fat utilization occurs.

This means, the higher the intensity your workouts, the more fat you will burn.

Sprints allow your body to directly use fat as its preferred source of energy while preserving your hard earned lean muscle.

It really is a win-win situation.

Have you ever wondered how movie stars like Gerard Butler, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lawrence, etc. can get fit so fast?

I will tell you how…

Sprints.

They work very hard for a short period of time, rest and repeat.

As I stated earlier, sprinting comes in many different forms. And today I have put together an awesome little sprint workout that I would love for you to try.

This can be done right in the comfort of your own home with zero equipment.

Sprint Workout

Here is a sprint workout you can try today:

Complete 30 seconds of each exercise with zero rest in between. Repeat 2 times for a total of five minutes. Only rest when you need to. If your form gets sloppy, you must take a break.

(A) Sprints in Place x 30 seconds
(B) Reach Through Push-Ups x 30 seconds
(C) Swing Through Lunge x 30 seconds on each side
(D) Burpees x 30 seconds
