My personal supplements plan

Dietary supplements are copping a beating lately. New studies suggest most people have been bamboozled by products that are unproven, untested and unnecessary.

So here’s the deal…

A few people have been emailing and asking about my own supplement plan.

So I’m going to share it with you.

Before we go any further, let me just say I am the MOST skeptical person under the sun when it comes to supplements. Unlike drugs, most supplements on the market are NOT FDA-approved, which means their safety and effectiveness has not  been evaluated.

In fact, I studied the effectiveness and ingredients of most common performance enhancing and fat burning supplements at University.

And to be honest, the results were dismal and scary.

That’s why I NEVER promote dodgy supplements to you, or try to shove them down your throat. (pun intended!) Especially if I’ve never tried it myself! I’m an ethical person, and I would never recommend something I haven’t personally used, enjoyed and seen results from.

Ok.

Onto the supplements I take daily:

(Note: Always check with your doc before you try new supplements, ok.)

#1: Fish Oil

(Two in the morning, Two in the evening)

The effectiveness of supplementing fish oil is a hotly debated topic in the health and fitness world. That’s a story for another day.

I’ve been taking fish oils on a daily basis for the last few years. I take it to help my joints and reduce inflammation. Studies show it burns fat too, but you have to take a LOT to see the benefits.

The brand I use is Nordic Naturals Omega-3’s. It’s the gold standard for fish oil, fully backed my solid scientific research and the only brand I recommend to my family, friends and clients. You can find it on Amazon. :)

#2: Probiotic

(After meals. One in the morning, one in the evening)

Most people eat yoghurt for their probiotic fix. However, since I’m lactose intolerant, I avoid eating dairy products. That’s why I take a probiotic for gut health. probiotic biotrust

Which brand is best? I’ve experimented with a bunch. The two that worked best for me were BioTrust’s Probiotic-10 and Dr Ohhira’s Probiotics Professional Formula.

I’ve noticed an improvement in my digestion and it helps to keep me “regular”. Hey, it’s the truth. ;) Plus, I feel lighter when I take it on a regular basis.

If I’m on the road or miss a day, I drink a Kombuca. It’s fermented tea, and yes, it can get pricey. Especially at WholeFoods (aka Whole PayCheck)!

#3: Magnesium Oil Spray

(I apply the spray at night before bed)

If you’re feeling stressed out, this is the most important supplement you can take. Why? Stress causes adrenaline spikes, your blood pressure rises and your cells consume magnesium more rapidly.

Research shows, you may help prevent health problems (like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and migraine headaches) and alleviate existing ones, like muscle aches, insomnia, and anxiety.

In fact, last year when I was stressed out of my mind, I started using magnesium oil spray (Ancient Minerals) on a regular basis. The result? I noticed a significant improvement in my energy levels, and I felt less muscle aches. Plus it helped me sleep more soundly.

How much do you need? Try 3 milligrams per pound of bodyweight as a maintenance dose. If you’re 165 pounds, take 500 milligrams daily. (If you regularly eat lots of magnesium-rich foods, cut the dose in half.)

For rapid absorption, use the magnesium oil spray and apply it to the back of your knees.

#4: Protein Powder

(Once a day. Usually in the afternoon)

biotrustlowcarb-1mbgJust about every day, I drink BioTrust Vanilla protein shake with 8oz unsweetened almond milk, 8oz iced water, 2 ice cubes, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a handful of organic frozen raspberries. It keeps me full until dinner and tastes like ice cream – I swear!

I don’t like using any commercial protein powders (like the ones from GNC or Trader Joes or Walmart) since most are packed with artificial sweeteners, soy and other crap.

And for the record, I do not eat protein bars. Yes, I’m a former addict. And I basically lived off these glorified candy bars for a few years in NYC. They are SO addictive!

You know, even the so-called “healthy” ones like Quest bars and BioTrust organic protein bars are trouble for your waistline, with a capital T.

Let’s face it. It’s not REAL food. It’s processed to smithereens and contains loads of hidden, fake sugars and other nasty ingredients.

Now, you might be wondering “why no multivitamin KV?”

Nearly every multivitamin I’ve come across is BS. Especially here in America. They use a lot of “filler” ingredients, which are no good for you. So it’s a total waste of money. And to be honest, I don’t like the taste of any of the powdered green juices. Yuck!

That’s why I start my day with a fresh green juice.

Here’s the recipe:

- 1 cup water

- 2 cups raw organic spinach

- ¼ raw organic cucumber

- ½ lemon squeezed

- ¼ cube inch of ginger (chopped)

- 1 tsp chia seeds

- 2 ice cubes

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a blender, then blend on high speed for a full minute. Or until it’s smooth.

It literally takes 60 seconds.

Easy peasy.

“Hey KV, does it taste like a chocolate milkshake?”

No, it doesn’t imaginary person.

You need to be open minded the first time you try it, ok.

However… a simple green juice it is an easy, fast way to get more veggies in your diet to naturally boost your energy.

I call it my “insurance policy” for making sure I get the vitamins and minerals I need every single day, to protect my health.

Earlier this year, I adopted the habit of adding this beverage to my morning routine.

And you know what?

I haven’t been sick at all this year, and I feel like a million bucks!
