Good news. A crisis was narrowly averted in NYC. A week ago, the headlines reported there was a serious threat to the city.

Suppliers had announced there could be a possible chicken wing shortage on Super Bowl Sunday. Oh my god. What a terrible disaster. The world must be ending.

American Football found it’s way into my heart this year. Finally, I understand what it’s all about. Beer and chicken wings. Oh and about 12 minutes of excitement in the last quarter when it’s all up to the coaches to pick the right strategic play.

So who am I going for today? The Giants.

OK, unfortunately you know they’re not playing.

I asked my friend and former NFL stud Forest Vance who he predicted would win the Super Bowl. He replied:

“I am a huge 49ers fan – so GOTTA pick them. I think it will be a close one though…”

Right, my money is on the 49er’s.

3 Super Food Swaps

While watching the big game, Americans consume an average of 1,200 calories from snacking alone according the Calorie Control Council. Holy smokes, that’s even before the pizza delivery arrives.

You can still have a good time and enjoy the deliciousness without packing on the pounds. Try these simple swaps to save yourself a ton of calories:

1. Chips

Instead of grabbing the corn chips with 33% extra salt and fat, switch for low-fat baked pita chips or lentil chips. I realize this still has a ton of carbs, so if you want super healthy, the best choice is to go for the veggies (like carrots, cucumber or broccoli), or simply limit the amount you eat.

When it comes to the dipping options, go easy on the ranch, spinach and artichoke dip and blue cheese dressing. Add guacamole, tzatiki and hummus to the mix. Pick up a salsa that has ingredients you can pronounce (you can check it on the label). Make sure the first ingredient is tomato.

superbowl pizza2. Pizza

Avoid the dodgy delivery pizza and whip up your own homemade creation. If cooking is not your strong point and you simple can’t avoid the delivery temptation, watch out for the sausage and cheese stuffed pizza crust.

I’m afraid the sight of this pizza could make you gain fat – it’s not low calorie, low fat or real sausage.

Switch out the random meats for veggies or grilled chicken breast. Sounds gourmet, right? Delish. Add herbs and spices to give it more flavor, like chilli flakes, garlic, basil, or oregano.

3. Chicken Wings

What’s a game of football without chicken wings??! A boring one.

Ok, this may be a hard one to twist your arm on, but a cool, healthy version we create at my place is grilled chicken breast strips with buffalo hot sauce smothered on top. From our experiments, Frank’s Original hot sauce seems to be the best out there. (No scary additives or fake ingredients).

Seriously, this is better than the real thing if you ask me. Just go easy on the blue cheese dressing…

Super Fat Loss Workout

Get your Super Bowl workout ON at home. I guarantee the gym will be packed on Sunday morning with pre-Super Bowl crowds, so this quick workout will get you burning plenty of calories .

This fat loss workout is inspired by the big game, but don’t worry you won’t have to dress up in all the crazy gear and smash into anyone (or get a concussion).

Set your interval timer for 50 seconds work, 10 seconds rest. Perform each of the following exercises in order, and continue for at least 2 rounds. I would advise 3 rounds today if you have your eyes on the beer and pizza already.

[content_box_red width="60%"]a)    Jumping Jacks

b)    Prisoner Squats

c)    Walk outs to Push ups

d)    Bulgarian Split Squat (split the time between legs)

e)    Lateral hops (side to side)

f)     Mountain climbers

g)    Prisoner reverse lunges

h)    Decline Push ups [/content_box_red]

Remember you have to work hard for this to be effective. Each round try to squeeze out one more rep, without compromising your form.

For those who find the food, commercials and half time entertainment more exciting than the game, you’re not the only one.

Enjoy the party and go the 49er’s!
