5 Warning Signs Your Metabolism is Slow

Can’t lose weight no matter what you try? Research shows poor eating habits, insufficient nutrients and not enough exercise can cause your metabolism to slow down.

But how can you tell if you have a slow metabolism?

metabolism warning signs

Believe it or not, a slow metabolic rate IS reversible!

And now before we go any further, I just want to get this out of this way. Because I definitely don’t want you to get the wrong idea…

If you hit a weight loss plateau, it does NOT automatically mean your metabolism is slow or damaged.

Read that last line again, so it really sinks in.

And while we’re on this topic, I don’t believe your metabolism is “broken”. I hate that word.

“Broken” implies forever. And it’s negative. You can push hard and do some pretty vicious things to yourself, but you can recover from it by taking care of yourself – not just eating clean – but eating for more calories maintenance.

Alright, enough ranting. Let’s get to the 5 warning signs your metabolism is slowing…

1. You find it easier to gain weight than to lose it – even with no change in your diet.

What has worked for you in the past simply doesn’t make a difference anymore.

(If you do have unexplained weight loss or weight gain, make sure you go to your local physician to check there are no underlying medical issues)

2. You can’t lose weight no matter how much you exercise

We’ve had this jammed down our throats for years…

“Losing weight is all about calories in vs calories out”

Theoretically, it should work. Doesn’t matter what you eat, just burn off more calories than you consume. I can tell you first hand that’s NOT true.

I’ve had clients training for half marathons (in a high calorie deficit) who struggled to lose a pound. Even men who trained 4-5 times a week and couldn’t lose their beer gut. Why? Because fat loss is chemistry. Not math class.

3. You notice cellulite in new places

You’re not alone. 40% of women (including fit, strong women and Hollywood stars) have cellulite on the back of their thighs, butt and hips.

But if you notice cellulite on the front of your legs – that’s a metabolic red flag.

Why? When your body starts using muscle for fuel, you lose collagen and elastin. Soft fatty deposits are left behind… And that’s cellulite. It can leave your skin looking stretched. This also makes cellulite more noticeable, and that’s why body fat starts to look lumpy and distorted.

Cellulite forms in the areas with least circulation, so without any activity, it’s very hard to get rid of it.

4. You have low energy, hair loss and dry/cracked skin

These are signs of thyroid hormone imbalance. Since your thyroid is the master gland of your metabolism, if you’re noticing any of these symptoms your metabolism could be slowing.

Approximately 200+ million people worldwide are now suffering from thryroid imbalance, according to researchers. Make sure you seek help from your physician.

5. You get horrible sugar cravings in the afternoon

If your body isn’t producing efficient energy form the foods you’re eating – you’ll experience sugar cravings.

Why in the afternoon?

Blood sugar dips, which is why you crave instant energy (hello little sugary friend). If you’ve experienced this before, you know intense sugar cravings are your worst nightmare!

If you have a fast metabolism, you can metabolize sugar from your glycogen stores without having an energy dip.

So how can you speed up your metabolism?

Excellent question!

Try a killer “hybrid” of bodyweight strength training and high intensity exercise in one workout…. Like this circuit from my Metabolic Fitness Challenge Program

Check it out:

Do 35 seconds work and 10 seconds transition for each exercise in the set…

Workout Set #1: Do 2 rounds

1A: Leg raise with Hip Lift

1B: Spiderman Planks

Workout Set #2: Do 2 rounds

2A: Wall sits with Stick Ups

2B: Run in Place

Yes, that’s madness right there… My abs and legs are feeling it just reading this!

Why is this so effective?

Sculpting muscle helps you burn more calories at rest because muscle is metabolically active. That’s why I always recommend strength training over cardio for faster fat loss.
